Endurance Training and Performance
As a sportsperson who runs,
As a sportsperson who runs, you should be aware that the so-called 'anaerobic charcteristics' which have a strong impact on distance running performance - plyometric leap distance, 20m, 50m and 300m sprint times, footstrike time, stride rate, muscle contractility, neuromuscular characteristics, VMART, muscle buffering capacity and max running speed - are all very trainable, and you need to emphasise them in your training if you want to reach your peak level of performance. To improve those characteristics, you will need a training programme which emphasises high-intensity running and which includes a strengthening plan to cycle you through proprioceptive training, general, running-specific and explosive strength training.
marathon training and fueling
I am a 30 year old female training for my first marathon. I am a little overwhelmed with all of the products on the market geared towards endurance athletes. I think I eat a pretty balanced diet, but when it comes to the long runs, do you have any recommendations for fueling muscles to go the distance? I went to a store recently and bought a whole assortment of gu's, shot blocks, sports drinks etc. Are there certain products that are more nutritionally sound than others (I know there are). I liked the Hammer Nutrition HEED beverage, not too sweet, no artificial ingredients. I took one serving of that with me for a 12 mile run, and consumed 4-5 "Cliff" shot blocks, I felt pretty good, but was exhausted the rest of the day, and when i went to bed, was dizzy. I seem to be a bit dizzy today too. I am also trying to figure out what to eat before these long runs, as I am running at 7 am. Any expertise advice is much appreciated.

Over the top Claims in Sports Nutrition
I was recently browsing the products in a mall nutrition supplement retail store and came to the following conclusion: Reading the labels of sport nutrition products can be a mind-blowing experience. Based on the marketing claims on the packaging it would seem that sport nutrition companies are spending millions of dollars each year on clinical trials that test the efficacy of their products on people engaged in sport training or competition.Or do they?..
